Topic Presentation: Hypermobility and Second Ankle Syndrome
Andrew Bull is an Australian Podiatrist who graduated in 1991 and has been the Principal Podiatrist of Sydney Sports Podiatry since 2003.
He has consulted to many elite (and enthusiastic amateur!) individual athletes, and teams including the Wallabies, Australian men's and women's Sevens Rugby teams, the ARU High Performance Unit and the Sydney Swans AFL Team.
As an experienced clinician, Andrew observed a large portion of patients presenting with similar signs and symptoms arising from increased joint hypermobility (and leg length discrepancies). "Second Ankle Syndrome" basically refers to the vast array of foot (and entire body) problems that can occur due to midfoot hypermobility. The hypermobility was extremely evident while assessing and treating elite rugby players with Polynesian ancestry. Plus a higher percentage of females, and patients with asian or Polynesian ancestry.
One of the biggest problems we face as clinicians is patient compliance to our treatment programs.
Andrew has been working on a research project to measure how this technique can reduce supination resistance in these patients objectively.
The lecture and workshop will run through how to identify, how to explain to patients and how to address this problem for long term results.
You will learn an in-clinic and at home program that is fairly simple for most patients to achieve with immediate benefits, and addresses a fairly surprising number of common problems we see daily.
